Complaints about Excessive Solicitors Bills

Solution If your complaint relates to a solicitor's bill, you can ask the solicitor to itemise the charges, so that he/she has to justify each item on the bill.

If you do not want to use this approach, and you think that your solicitor's charges are unfair, you can request a remuneration certificate. A remuneration certificate is a statement from the Legal Complaints Service which states the amount that they believe your solicitor should be paid for the work he/she has completed.

Your solicitor should have informed you of your right to request a remuneration certificate when they sent you your bill. Solicitors often do this on the back of the bill. If they have fulfilled this obligation, then you have one month from when they notified you of this right to make your request. If your solicitor fails to inform you of your right to apply for a remuneration certificate, and they have already taken their costs from money that they hold on your behalf, then you have three months starting from the date that you receive the bill to make your written request.
